Tekken 7 is an upcoming fighting game being developed by Bandai Namco Games. It will be the ninth installment in the Tekken fighting game series. The game will be using the Unreal Engine 4[6]. The game was announced at the 2014 Evolution Championship Series by Namco game director & chief producer Katsuhiro Harada[7]. It was initially stated that the original release date would be for February 2015, though further clarification revealed that the date would only have a pre-launch. It was later revealed the pre-launch would to be available in Japanese Arcades on February 18th, 2015,[3] and that the real release date would be at March instead.[8]

Gameplay

Combo System

Tekken 7's combo system retains some of the aspects of Tekken Revolution, in which it is no longer possible to bound a character during a combo. Additionally, it is no longer possible to catch an opponent rolling. An interesting addition is the ability to roll after doing a toe kick when getting up. However, the bound state still exists, but "a lot of moves that use to bound being taken out"[9]. In order to compensate the lack of bounds, many moves were given new combo dynamics in order to extend combos.

An example would be Hwoarang's "Backlash" having the same properties in a combo as it would on a regular hit, in which it would cause the opponent to slump to the ground. This new feature has been dubbed by Japanese players as "Kirimomi" or "Tailspin", and, like bound had been in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and 6, can only be done once during a combo. It is still possible to use the Kirimomi after a low parry. In the official command list, these moves are listed as "screw" attacks.

Additionally, the Okizeme system also follows Tekken Revolution's system with new revisions, allowing tech rolls or quick get-ups in more positions. Notably, the back roll is no longer present, and has been replaced by a crawl back instead. The damage scaling during combos has increased considerably as well, encouraging players to use less moves in order to maximize combo damage.

Trades

When two hits trade, they will both have their CH properties now.

Power Crushers

One of Tekken 7's new features was the introduction of a new type of move called Power Crushers. These moves would absorb damage from a mid or a high attack, and the move would still continue despite taking damage[10], but a Power Crusher would leave the user vulnerable to low attacks and throws.

Rage Arts

Rage Arts alter the performance of a single move of a character during Rage Mode. A Rage Art perform an attack animation akin to Street Fighter's Super Moves[10]. A significant note is that when a Rage Art is performed, the character will immediately lose their rage. These arts can also be done during a combo. Some characters, however, seem to have different sorts of Rage Arts.

Kazuya's Devil transformation can be considered this, as Kazuya can only turn into Devil once per round, and this will consume the rage, while Paul's Rage Art can end with a launcher, rather than the typical ender. Whether or not such features or variations will be given to other characters is unknown.

Item Moves

Item moves will be returning for Tekken 7. For the original Tekken 7, there has only been generic item moves.

Stage Effects

Like in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, stage effects will also return. In this game, the floor break and balcony breaks will leave an opponent in a bouncing state rather than the standard bound state from previous games. If a Screw attack is used to break a wall, it won't be possible to Screw the opponent.

Rage Mode

"Rage" still exists, but does not add as much damage as it would in Tekken 6 and Tag Tournament 2, Rage's new function is to give characters access to Rage Arts. Additionally, using Rage Arts also consumes the rage. Also, instead of rage leaving off an energy wave following the user, an enraged character will instead be highlighted.

Online Mode

For the first time in its arcade history, it is now possible to play online battles with other players from differing arcades. This feature was first tested in the second Japanese location test and the Korean location test, in which players from differing arcades were able to play against each other without significant issues in the console such as lag. Further images reveal that cameras for both players may now differ from each other. In some cases, both player's cameras will feature their respective characters on a single side, rather than both players traditionally sharing a single camera angle. With this, Player 1's camera may depict his character fighting at the left side, while Player 2's camera will also depict his character fighting at the left side at the same time.[11]. Another new feature was brought into the game which allowed players to have a "revenge match" against the player who they previously played against. A "special revenge" match option will appear if you are demoted by someone. The main difference is that each match of this format prevents you from ever receiving a demotion risk.

If a player has 10 consecutive online wins, he/she is immediately returned to the main menu.

Treasure Boxes

Similar to the team trials of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Tekken 7 now introduces treasure boxes. Each time someone participates in a fight, the "treasure gauge" will increase. Eventually, as points accumulate, the player will be able to open these boxes to see their contents. Treasures include tickets, fight money, or possibly customization items. These boxes can be opened when using the actual arcade cabinet.

Throws

All regular throws are now broken by either 1 or 2. Command throws are still broken by specific breaks.[12]

Customization

Fight money is now purely used to change the colors of specific costume parts and sections. To receive items other than through the lotteries that Tekken-net provides, there is now a crafting system. Occasionally after fights, players can receive orbs from bonuses and treasure boxes. Once enough orbs have been received, it is possible to receive a specific type of item. Additionally, instead of being able to select which specific panel you would like in Tag 2, players must now use a lottery in order to receive a random panel for any character instead.

Development

Tekken 7 was first announced by Tekken game director & chief producer, Katsuhiro Harada on July 13, 2014 during Evolution Championship Series 2014. Originally, the game was not planned to be announced during that event, but due to the leak of a video presentation of the game, Harada had no choice but to announce it[13][14]. It will make use of the Unreal Engine 4 game engine which will allow the game to be developed for multiple platforms[15]. A teaser trailer in both English and Japanese was released during the announcement, featuring recurring characters Kazuya Mishima and Heihachi Mishima alongside an unidentified female figure[16]. A full version of the teaser was then released of the teaser during the San Diego Comic Con 2014.

There have been many speculations between fans on whether or not Tekken 7 will be the final game in the series. The first note that led to this was during the first trailer, where it ended with the statement, "The final battle". Later the second trailer reinforces this by saying, "The conclusion of the Mishima saga".

Harada also said that Tekken 7 arcade release will be have network features very similar to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and that Tekken 7 will feature the character designs of seven guest artists, including Mari Shimazaki (Bayonetta), Yusuke Kozaki (Fire Emblem Awakening, No More Heroes), Ninnin (Duel Masters, Cardfight!! Vanguard) and Kenichiro Yoshimura (Max Anarchy/Anarchy Reigns). Also, Shinji Aramaki will be directing the intro for Tekken 7[17][18]. It has been stated very clearly that this game will answer many questions regarding the Mishimas such as Heihachi's reasons for killing Kazumi, throwing Kazuya off of a cliff when he was a child, and hunting Jin down, the Devil Gene's origin and the final conclusion of the Mishima's blood battle.

During August 2014, Harada asked fans to give feedback regarding an Arab character, which concept art was revealed on August 8[19]. This was meant to prevent accidental offense to the Arab community if the character appears in the game.[20]. By January 1: Harada has noted that due to the positive feedback from both Arab and International community, the character, Shaheen, would now be in the game.

Harada confirmed on his Twitter that Akitaka Tohyama would return to compose Tekken 7's soundtrack[21]. Later, at late April 2016, Namco released the official soundtrack of Tekken 7. Aside from Akitaka Tohyama, the other credited artists were Rio Hamamoto, Taku Inoue, Nobuyoshi Sano, Keiichi Okabe and BatAAr

Harada confirmed on his Twitter that the Japanese voice actors would all reprised their roles in the game.[22]

According to Harada: additions to the cast, as well as additional graphic updates and patches will be done through the cabinets' online capabilities. As a reward to players who have accounts for the arcade version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, a special Mokujin life bar and 100,000 fight money is given when the account is ported to Tekken 7, all of which are found in Tekken Net.

Tekken 7: Fated Retribution is an updated version of Tekken 7. It was officially announced on December 11, 2015.

The official trailer was shown at the end The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2015 on December 11, 2015, in Tokyo, Japan. A new trailer shows Kazumi pleading to a mysterious figure to stop her husband Heihachi if she is unable to do so herself. This figure is revealed to be Akuma from the Street Fighter series. The graphics for the game have also improved, and the lighting for the stages also uses a filter-like style, primarily highlighting a single type of color, akin to how Tekken Revolution edited stages from Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Features

Rage Mode

It now takes considerably less amounts of damage for a character to reach Rage Mode. Originally, Rage would be triggered once the character hit 33% of life or lower, but a patch updated this, and Rage now triggers at 25% of life.

Rage Drive

Rage Drive now act as an alternative to Rage Arts. A Rage Drive is a series of consecutive attacks or a single attack with a higher amount of damage and increases the options a player has. When a character uses a Rage Drive, they will be highlighted by a blue aura for the attack's duration, and there is a distinct sound effect when the Rage Drive successfully hits. If a Rage Drive and a Rage Art collide, then they will cancel each other out. Failing to successfully hit or complete the Rage Drive will still consume the rage. If a character is knocked out by a Rage Drive, a different slow motion effect will be used as the announcer says "K.O".

Prior to E3 2016, the Rage Drive was originally labeled as the "Rage Attack"

Rage Arts

Rage Arts can still be activated during Rage Mode, but the lower amount of health remaining in the user's health bar, the more damage is dealt. Some characters also had their Rage Art changed moving from 7 to Fated Retribution. A Rage Art will still be able to absorb a Rage Drive like a normal hit.

Online Mode

Tekken 7: FR has an improved matchmaking system, where the players can be more selective on where they want their opponent to be from. They can also register other players as "Friends" online through Tekken-net and search them out if they're currently available to play against.

Additionally, battling either a friend or an offline opponent will give you the option to change the stage and your character before your revenge match.

Data Transfer

Customization items from 7 can be ported to FR without issue. Ranks, however, have been adjusted to fit into the new ranking system of Fated Retribution, taking into account the new ranks.

Item Battle

During battles against opponents, you may occasionally have an item battle. Winning an item battle will give you unique items.

Online Tournament

It is possible to now have online tournaments with friends or random people in the game's online mode. Lobbies can be password-locked, and queing players can chat while waiting for their turn to play.

Story

With the war between the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporation raging on, the battles soon turn over to G Corporation's favor, as the Zaibatsu's leader, Jin Kazama suddenly disappears. Exploiting his absence, Heihachi Mishima regains control of the Zaibatsu, and maintains the antagonistic role of the company in the fight against Kazuya Mishima and G Corporation. As the war reaches its end, so does the conflict of the Mishima family.

Trivia

  • During a match, there will be new "slow motion" effects. If both characters' moves are about to collide, the camera will close in on both fighters, inducing slow-motion until one or both moves are completed.
  • Slow motion effects have also affected the replay system, which has been considerably adjusted. When an opponent is knocked out, the fight will suddenly go slow motion until the K.O'd character hits the ground, then the subsequent round will occur. This change has been brought about due to the developers' disdain for "corpse hitting" in the old replay systems.
  • Stages will now change music when one player is one round away from winning the game.
  • In the stage select screen, instead of the stage preview being a single picture of the stage, the preview will move its camera around the stage.
  • If a double K.O will occur between two players, instead of one victory being randomly handed to one, the game will instead declare it a draw, and will give both players a game over.
  • The game was briefly shown in the manga, "Totsugeki! Tonari no Pro Gamer 2", showing Japanese players, Yuu, Nobi and AO, as well as a few illustrations of the finals match at EVO that the latter two players had.
  • The orbs are imprinted with the name and logo of Violet Systems.
  • There are collaboration customization items based on another Bandai Namco Game, Taiko no Tatsujin.
  • Additionally, the final round theme of Akuma at the Abandoned Temple appears as a [4] in the game
