[edit] Introduction

Baek Doo San is a character in the Tekken series. Baek first appeared in Tekken 2, and he has returned for Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 5.

Baek first appeared in Tekken 2 as Marshall Law's Stage Eight sub-boss. The reason for this is because Baek Doo San went on a rampage after accidentally killing his father. Baek destroyed many dojos, including Marshall's. In Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, Ogre / True Ogre used some of Baek's moves (such as Baek's "Hunting Hawk" move). In Baek's Tekken 5 / Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Prologue, it is mentioned that, on his way home from training, Baek was attacked and knocked unconscious. Baek woke up in a military hospital. According to the Defense Minister, he had been in a coma for over a year.

[edit] Trivia

  • The name "Baek-Du San" is that of a mountain that is split in two by the North Korean-Chinese border. It is treated almost like a national monument by the South Koreans.
  • When Baek's name is written in the Hangul alphabet, it translates as "백두산". When written in kanji, it translates as "白頭山".
  • Baek's name translated from Korean is "Paek Tu Mt.," while from Japanese is "White head mountain."
  • Owners of the Tekken 2 arcade machines were given the option to set either Jun or Baek as one of the ten default characters displayed on the selection screen. (In the Playstation version, it was Jun who was placed on this spot.) This was accessible via a dip switch.
  • Baek's sub-bosses are Marshall Law and Hwoarang.
  • While playing as Baek in Tekken 5, he meets Marshall Law. However, none of them reminisce about the events in Tekken 2, as if they have not yet met each other. After Baek defeats Marshall, Baek says, "I hold instructional sessions on Sundays at my dojo. Why don't you join in on one of my sessions?"

[edit] Story

Tekken 2 Baek Doo San.

He first appeared in Tekken 2 as the sub-boss of Marshall Law. According to the storyline, Baek accidentally killed his father during a sparring session. As a result, Baek went on a rampage, destroying several dojos. One of the worst hit happened to be Law's. The two met at The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2.

[edit] Ending Animation "Memories"
Baek as a child (on the left) and his father (on the right), as seen in Baek's T2 ending.

Baek's ending shows him sitting on a bench outside a park. He takes out a locket containing a photo of him and his father. Baek reminisces about his training sessions with his father, remembering the great person he was and how much he loved him. Remembering his father for the man he was, Baek finally accepts his father's death, finding peace within himself.

[edit] Tekken 3

According to the Tekken 3 storyline, Baek was presumed dead after encountering Ogre the fictional Aztec God of Fighting. One of his closest students, Hwoarang, entered the third Iron Fist Tournament to exact revenge for his master's death and to have a rematch with Jin Kazama, the only fighter he had ever fought to a draw.

Baek is featured as a playable character in Tekken Tag Tournament, a non-canonical Tekken game.

[edit] Ending Animation

A closeup of Baek's face is shown. A few seconds later, it is revealed that Hwoarang is with him. Then, Hwoarang sits on his lower legs and knees. This ending mostly shows Baek talking to Hwoarang. Since Hwoarang doesn't appear to be glad to hear what he's saying, Baek is most likely either scolding him for something or saying that he needs to train more, but since Baek's words can't be heard, it is unknown what Baek actually says in this ending animation. This ending takes place in Hwoarang's stage.

Several characters from the Tekken 2 lineup returned in Tekken 5, Baek included. According to the Tekken 5 storyline, his encounter with Ogre had left him in a coma, not dead as initially presumed. He woke up over a year later, after Hwoarang had already competed in the third Iron Fist tournament. Baek began teaching Tae Kwon Do at military bases. Hwoarang was drafted into the South Korean Military, but he ran away to compete in the fourth Iron Fist Tournament. When he was arrested by the South Korean Military Police, he was informed that Baek was alive.

Two months later, Hwoarang completed his service and Baek asked him to to enter the fifth Iron Fist tournament. Baek also entered the tournament to test his student's skills.

[edit] Interludes

Stage 4: Marshall Law

Baek asks Marshall, "Would you mind letting me test out my Tae Kwon Do skills?" Marshall responds by assuming his fighting stance, and a battle ensues. After Baek wins, he says, "I hold instructional sessions on Sundays at my dojo. Why don't you join in on one of my sessions?" Marshall is shown laying unconscious on the ground.

Stage 7: Hwoarang

Hwoarang runs up to Baek and says, "Master! Please take it easy! I'll..." Baek says, "I'm fine. We haven't sparred in a while. Come!" After Baek wins, he tells Hwoarang, "You still have a lot to learn. Go train some more." Hwoarang walks away, clutching his chest. Baek then says to himself, "Now to take care of the real business. I'll have to see what's going on here with my own eyes."

Final Stage: Jinpachi Mishima

Baek walks through Final Stage 2. Jinpachi (in human form) walks up behind him and says, "I'm impressed that you've made it this far." (Beak turns around) "I am Jinpachi Mishima. My goal... My goal is to destroy all existence!" after which he transforms into his "Devil" form.

[edit] Ending Animation

Baek's ending in Story Battle mode shows Hwoarang about to fight a group of three men around his age. Baek then steps in, disapproving Hwoarang's street fights. After one of the men attacks Hwoarang, Baek easily takes out all three. Baek walks away, dragging Hwoarang behind him. Seeing as this only shows a situation after the tournament, and does not suggest who won, this ending will most likely be canon.
